INTERNSHIP:  The Town of Wake Forest seeks a highly motivated and energetic student in the Parks & Recreation field to join our dedicated Recreation team and complete an internship for their related field of study.
 
NATURE OF WORK:  The selected individual will gain experience and understanding of how a Parks & Recreation Maintenance department functions. An intern in this position will perform a variety of semi-skilled, manual labor tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreational facilities.  Work may include performing various horticultural practices, performing maintenance tasks on parks and recreation facilities, mowing, trimming, and operating equipment. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions and hazards.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Maintenance Supervisor.  This is a generic class specification and may not describe all of the duties specific to each position.  An employee may be assigned to ball field crews or general maintenance crews.   
The Internship runs from approximately mid-May through mid-August. Interns are expected to work 20-40-hours per week, but may include additional hours as needed, including nights and weekends.  This is a non-exempt classification under FLSA, and as such, may be eligible for overtime compensation.

Essential Job Functions
The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Internship is a comprehensive learning experience in Wake Forest. This 10-week internship program provides exposure to various facets of recreation maintenance.  The intern will work closely with division staff to support daily operations and contribute to the success of Town programs and events.
  • Performs various maintenance tasks such as mowing grass and preparing ball fields for play; repairing fences and gates; removing leaves, debris, and snow from facilities.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks on public recreational complexes, playground equipment, fences and gates, and tennis courts.
  • Prunes and weed eat.
  • Applies mulch.
  • Performs landscaping duties such as planting grass, building planting beds, applying fertilizer, etc.
  • Cleans bathrooms and gets up trash at recreational facilities.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks, such as hand tools, and mowing machines.
  • Drags, sets pitching rubber, installs bases, repairs fields, and paints lines on ball fields.
  • Mows grass, trims shrubbery, clears and landscapes other municipal property.
  • Determines equipment and materials needed on job sites.
  • Sets up and takes down for special events.
  • Works on weekends for tournaments and special events.
  • Performs related duties as required.




Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:
Working knowledge of horticultural practices.
Ability to perform heavy manual work over long periods of time.
Ability to work outside in various environmental conditions.
Ability to operate equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes some evenings and weekends 
Responsible and self-motivated





Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
