Job Summary:
The data engineering intern will be exposed to a wide variety of technologies and practices meant to retrieve, process, and deliver data accurately and on time to support operations and analytics across the organization with a specific focus on applied sports science. Using an established data platform and standards, the intern will learn and be responsible for quality assurance, data pipeline development, technology enhancement, requirements gathering, vendor communication, architectural decisions, and additional needs as dictated by short- and long-term planning. The goal of the internship is to produce a capable junior data engineer ready for a full-time position.
Employees are expected to follow all Cincinnati Reds policies and procedures, serve as positive role models, and manage their workload effectively. This includes demonstrating flexibility, prioritizing tasks efficiently, and meeting departmental productivity standards.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS degree or equivalent experience in a computational science or technical field

  • Prior use of SQL in an academic or professional environment
  • Design and/or maintenance of large datasets
  • Exposure to cloud engineering
  • Understanding of serverless architecture and design principles
  • Experience handling large datasets and time-series data
Skills
  • SQL, Python

Pipeline Support: Develop and maintain basic ETL processes using Python and SQL to support data management and transformation.45%
Data Quality & Troubleshooting: Monitor batch processing pipelines and troubleshoot simple data issues to ensure accuracy for analysis.20%
SQL Development: Write and optimize basic SQL queries for data retrieval, validation, and ad-hoc analysis requests.15%
Documentation & Version Control: Maintain accurate documentation for data processes and utilize Git for version control of code.10%
Learning & Development: Actively learn data engineering best practices, cloud platform basics, and participate in code reviews.5%
