Location: Seattle, HQ Schedule: 40 hours / week

This Opportunity:
The Innovation Team is seeking a Materials Digitalization Engineer Intern to join us at our Seattle HQ offices. You will have the opportunity to contribute directly to developing and validating next-generation footwear material models using advanced FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and material calibration tools. You will work closely with the Modeling and Simulation team, which builds predictive simulations of Brooks footwear using our custom materials, and with Mechanical Testing to ensure your models reflect real-world behavior.

Through this internship, you will:

  • Work directly under the mentorship of an engineer on the team to learn modern FEA material modeling, calibration, and validation techniques.
  • Gain hands-on experience with AbaqusRadioss, and scripting workflow for automating calibration and data analysis.
  • Contribute to the creation and expansion of Brooks’ Material Model Library, a foundation building block for scalable, full-shoe simulations.
  • Learn how real-world mechanical and material testing inform footwear digital models.
  • Present your work and findings to Innovation and Product teams, building skills in technical communication and collaborative problem solving

Your Impact (Responsibilities):

  • Create material models for multiple midsole foams (3+) and other bottom materials, using test data and FEA calibration techniques.
  • Work with manager to conduct static and dynamic FEA simulations to validate material models against experimental results.
  • Add new material models to Brooks’ Material Model Library by includingcalibrated parameters, documentation, validation plots, and simulation-ready files in a reusable structure.
  • Help standardize and accelerate material testingàsimulationsàmechanical testing workflow
  • Collaborate with members of Modeling & Simulation and Mechanical Testing Teams to understand

Project:

  • As a part of your experience as an intern at Brooks, you will have the opportunity to complete a project under the support and supervision of your mentor and manager. Details of your project will be finalized once you arrive at Brooks based on your interests, and the needs of the business. You will present your work and findings to leadership at Brooks, to hone in on your research, analysis and recommendations, and to refine your presentation skills.

A high-level project outline for this internship opportunity is as follows:

  • The Materials Digitalization Engineer Intern will assist our Sr. Mechanical Engineers in preparing material models of new bottom and potentially upper materials, enabling the creation of full shoe simulations using custom Brooks material data.  This supports the team in building scalable simulation workflows that extend beyond individual product styles.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Materials, Structural or Computational Engineering (or a related field).
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials, particularly polymers, and FEA.
  • Experience with at least one FEA solver.
  • Coursework or experience with mechanical testing experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Python or other scripting skills for data processing or automation is a plus.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn and adapt to new tools.
  • Ability to commit to 3 months onsite in Seattle, WA, up to 40 hours a week.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
