Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Under the supervision of the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations, serve as primary media contact for assigned Red Storm teams.

Prepare press releases, produce media guides and record statistics.

Assist in the publicity of all 17 Red Storm varsity sports. Supervise student assistants for game operations at home events, including men’s and women’s basketball games at Carnesecca Arena and Madison Square Garden. 

Foster relationships with members of the New York and national media. Oversee media credentialing process.

Coordinate and publish written and photographic content for the University’s official athletics website and official social media platforms.

Assist in the planning of media events, such as news conferences, photo shoots and interviews.

Contribute information to aid in SJU-TV video, audio and digital broadcasts.

Dates of Assistantship:

Two year appointment, August 1 to June 30.

Summary of Services Provided by the St. John’s Athletic Communications Department:

Facilitate publicity for St. John’s University, its Athletics program, 17 varsity athletics teams and 300-plus student-athletes. Generate St. John’s news and expand the St. John’s Athletics brand by utilizing internal resources and traditional and “new” media outlets.

Pitch news stories about teams to local and national media, and arrange interviews for coaches and student-athletes.

Administer training for coaches and student-athletes to execute successful interviews.

Staff all home events, and travel to road events when possible to ensure best coverage.

Coordinate video operations and engineer SJU-TV Mobile Production Unit which produces approximately 100 live athletic event broadcasts per year.

Maintain official athletics website RedStormSports.com and related digital platforms.

Create online and print publications, in addition to maintaining biographical and historical information and stat keeping.

Relevant undergraduate experience in the field of professional or collegiate athletic communications required. Proficiency in Desktop Publishing, NCAA Live Stats scoring software and social media management preferred. Must have an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations. Monthly stipend.

Partial tuition remission. Most graduate assistants choose an MBA in Marketing or Sport Management major track.
