Internship Program Overview:

The San Francisco 49ers offer full-time, paid internships for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in professional sports while exploring careers within the National Football League. Our program is designed to allows participants to contribute directly to the organization’s success while applying the knowledge learned in the classroom.

Interns are embedded within a specific department while also having opportunities to explore the broader organization through group networking events, training sessions, and one-on-one meetings with leaders across the club. Each intern is supported by a mentor and team and contributes to a project that builds skills and professional confidence.

General Internship details and expectations:

  • Our interns are paid $19.00 per hour and are expected to work 30-40 hours or more per week during the internship period. 
  • Interns are expected to commit to the full term of the internship and be mostly onsite (no remote internships are available), which runs from mid-July through the end of February. 
  • Interns are expected to work flexible hours that include nights, holidays, and weekends. 
  • Interns to provide their own housing and transportation

  • Friday, February 26, 2027 - Last day of the internship program

The 49ers Foundation harnesses football to educate and empower Bay Area youth through a collective of innovative and community-focused strategies. From award-winning STEAM education and nationally recognized youth football programs, to impactful community partnerships with leading non-profits, we are tirelessly dedicated to inspiring the confidence and collaboration our youth need to tackle what is possible.

We are looking for teammates to help us grow the Foundation’s impact in the Bay Area. This role is responsible for day-to-day accounting functions by processing and recording transactions in accounts receivable and accounts payable, generating tax acknowledgement letters to donors and preparing supporting financial analysis reports as needed. This position will be assigned special event and game day accounting duties. The position requires superior organization skills, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and the ability to take initiative with little direction. The ideal candidate will have a team-oriented “can do” attitude, experience working with general ledgers and accounting data entry, especially fundraising auctions, accounts receivable and payable, and possess a proven track-record of delivering high caliber work-product in an efficient and timely manner.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Assists with data entry and tracking of incoming accounts receivable deposits, donations and cash receipts from checks, online credit card donations, point-of-sale terminals, and fundraising platforms.
  • Assists with preparing accounts receivable invoices for events and program sponsorships. 
  • Supports weekly accounts payable processing including coding invoices to correct expense accounts, routing invoices for approval, and entering invoices into accounting system for payment processing.
  • Records credit card purchase transactions in the general ledger and reconciles monthly credit card statement with credit card purchase forms.
  • Assists with preparing monthly budget vs actual reports for event and program managers. 
  • Assists with annual financial audit, budget forecasts, and other fiscal planning.
  • Assists with financial data analysis and reporting. 
  • Generates tax acknowledgment letters to donors.
  • Provides support on gameday and event fundraising activations. 
  • Maintain files of reconciliations and supporting financial documents.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Abilities & Skills:

  • Excellent organization, analytical, and attention to detail skills are required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact comfortably with people in all walks of life if necessary. 
  • The ability to be discreet with sensitive financial information.
  • Professionalism in all interactions with fans, corporate partners, 49ers staff members, 49ers players, alumni, executives, coaches, and their families.
  • Punctuality and accountability are essential for all aspects of intern role.
  • Team player, willing to contribute to ad hoc projects. 

Education and Experience:

  • Relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with Google Workspace and Microsoft Suite including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Experience working with QuickBooks or similar accounting software. 
  • Experience with data analytics. 
  • Preferred knowledge of bookkeeping, accounting best practices, federal and state law regulations, and U.S. GAAP.
