General position summary: As a versatile writer for student-athlete features and
newsletter communications, the internal and member communications intern assists
the communications staff in supporting the mission of the NCAA. The intern must be a
strong writer and adept in interpersonal communication, time management and
organization.
Desired knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Experience writing and developing content for campus organizations, including
athletics departments, university publications and other organizations.
- Experience producing and executing a strategic content plan for newsletter
communications.
- Ability to work well on collaborative projects but also able to work independently with
little or no supervision.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining
flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and
confidentiality.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Strong decision-making and attention to detail.
- Comfort collaborating and communicating with various internal and external
stakeholders.
- Experience as an active leader on campus and work as a writer and/or communicator,
preferably in athletics or higher education. Candidates are graduating seniors or
recent graduates.
Essential duties:
- Develop written content that aligns with the communications department’s goals and
advances the national office’s mission.
- Collaborate with other NCAA departments, member schools, conferences and other
affiliate groups to identify stories that align with the NCAA’s storytelling strategy, which
includes highlighting student-athletes who excel athletically and academically,
showcasing the diversity of the NCAA athlete community, and displaying how the college
athletics experience benefits student-athletes at all levels of the Association.
- Lead production of The Disk, the NCAA’s intranet and weekly internal newsletter for all
staff and contractors, and oversee the writing of staff features and announcements.
- Help manage and develop content for key external newsletters to NCAA member
schools.
- Develop strategy and decision-making based on content analytics.
- Partner with other communications units to help increase the reach of written content,
including via social media, search engine optimization and external media pitches.
- Support the planning and execution of communication efforts for NCAA events.
- Ensure all written content is accurate and meets group goals for communicating in clear, concise language.
