The Athletic is accepting applications for its Leon H. Carter newsroom internship for the fall of 2026.
The NHL intern will play a key role in the hockey department, writing and reporting on stories across the league’s 32 teams. This is a 12-week program running from September to December 2026. The intern will be embedded within the NHL department’s News, Enterprise and Trending team, which will expose the intern to quick-turn assignments as well as deep-dive projects exploring some of the most compelling storylines in hockey. The mission of The Athletic’s internship program is to attract and develop the industry’s next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative hockey coverage while also helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world.
This is a remote internship for candidates residing in the US and Canada only. It may require some travel to Chicago and/or New York City. Candidates in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York City office.
The rate of pay for this role is $20 USD per hour.
