Position Summary
Join the City of West St Paul as our Recreation Intern. 
This position offers up to 560-hours of internship experience that generally spans 14-15 weeks from May-August. An ideal candidate has the desire to explore the many facets of Parks and Recreation as a career. Brings new ideas and enthusiasm to the workplace and West St. Paul community. Will gain experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation, hands-on event management, seasonal staff supervision, facility oversight, marketing, and recreation software operation.
Primary Duties

Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of Parks and Recreation activities, events, and projects including youth summer camps, adult classes, art programs, athletics, and sustainability initiatives.
Enhance a currently offered special event or create a new program. 
Support scheduling, onboarding, training, and give occasional work direction to seasonal staff.
Acquire necessary supplies and equipment, and ensure materials are prepared for camps, classes, and events. 
Communicate reminders and updates with program participants generally through email. 
Serve as a program instructor to support seasonal staffing needs. 
Occasionally act as an on-site supervisor at the outdoor pool facility and at programs to assess operations and recommend any changes. 
Contribute to the development of marketing collateral that promotes the Parks and Recreation Department, including social media content, flyers, and the city quarterly newsletter.
Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.


Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Currently attending or have graduated within 1-2 years from a park and recreation program or similar. 
Has a schedule that allows for flexibility, including working some nights and weekends.
Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver’s license or equivalent out-of-state license.


Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable skill in standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, email and calendar, as well as the ability to effectively utilize the Internet.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
Considerable ability to effectively represent the department to community groups and the public.
Considerable ability to work collaboratively as well as independently, take initiative and follow through.
