May through August

The Woodlands Township is seeking two (2) interns to assist the Parks and Recreation Department in the summer of 2025. The purpose of this position is to further the students understanding and experience in the field of the parks and recreation (programming, park planning, administration, open space management, etc.).

$6,000 stipend for a summer semester internship

Summary of Duties:

The purpose of this position is to further the student’s understanding and experience in the field of the parks and recreation. The intern will assist with a variety of parks and recreation management duties. Our internship experience is geared to meet the needs of each intern individually. Interns will be responsible for listing what they feel are important professional skills to bridge this gap.

The internship program has two divisions (Recreation and Parks). The Recreation division will work at the Bear Branch Recreation Center, Rob Fleming Recreation Center, Texas TreeVentures, Aquatics, Special Events and Riva Row Boathouse). The Parks division will work with Natural Resources, Forestry, Facility Maintenance, Ranger Programs, Project Management, Streetscapes, and Aquatics.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, including holidays, evenings and weekends.  
  • Assigned to a supervisor who will develop a work schedule and job responsibilities prior to start date.  
  • Successfully complete an orientation with supervisor on the policies, procedures, and philosophies of The Woodlands Township.  
  • Progress will be assessed, and employee will meet with supervisor to evaluate job performance.  
  • Employee may be responsible for but not limited to the following projects and duties: schedule of required meetings and organize and conduct special events, programs, and/or projects. 
  • Exposure to the following areas: budget preparation, programming, brochure preparation, publicity/marketing, program project supervision, revenue/participation reports, purchasing, hiring processes, scheduling of employees, program evaluations, and facility operations.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Pre-employment Responsibilities of the applicant:  Responsible for arranging his/her own housing/lodging during the internship. Subject to drug screen and background investigation.  

Responsibilities of The Woodlands Township: Follow guidelines set forth by the intern’s university and supervisor.  

Supervisory Responsibilities: Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees 

Work performed: The jobs or tasks of the group are in a somewhat technical or advanced activity where work methods are well-established.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  

Work Conditions: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education: Students enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's Degree program with a concentration in Parks and Recreation Management or closely related field (sports management, public administration). Internship, in related field, needed to graduate, preferred, not required. 

Experience: One (1) year of related experience required.  

Licenses and Certifications:  Valid Texas Driver's License. 

Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age or older by hire date.
