Job Summary
Recreation Interns are involved in the development, promotion and implementation of quality recreational activities and events to resort guests and members. He or she must demonstrate excellent communication, follow-up and customer service skills. This internship is intended to fulfill part of the graduation requirements of students currently enrolled in an accredited university (for credit hours). The position is full-time, seasonal and includes weekends and holidays. Works under direct supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead resort guests and members in all summer recreation programs in a professional manner.
- Displays a friendly, outgoing, approachable, and energetic attitude at all times.
- Execute with enthusiasm all programs tailored to diverse age groups including kids programs, adult programs (21+), and family activities. (I.e. daily craft hour, cornhole and volleyball tournaments, scavenger hunts, bingo, movie nights, etc.)
- Maintains inventory of program supplies and informs the Recreation Director or Program Coordinator on a regular basis of supply levels and needs.
- Recreation staff, Naturalists, and Camp Counselors all work in the Activity/Nature Center. Act as the first point of contact within the Nature Center by greeting and communicating with guests in-person, over the phone and via email on a daily basis.
- Handles opening and closing procedures as well as completing daily maintenance tasks as required.
- Promote all recreation and nature activities, services, and programs to members and guests.
- Assist on all functions of the department as needed, including but not limited to, school groups, special events, recreation and nature programs, and Camp Fripp programs.
- Responsible for educating guests on resort functions and providing quality customer service including answering phone calls, taking reservations for programs and completing sales transactions.
- Communicate and cooperate with all members, guests and vendors in a professional, courteous manner.
- Exhibit organizational skills and professional manners with fellow staff members, managers, and resort employees.
- Actively listen and appropriately respond to customer inquiries and complaints, always remaining composed and courteous showing genuine empathy and sincerity.
- Follow established policies and procedures by monitoring and ensuring compliance with organizational standards and operational processes.
- Practice proper safety techniques in accordance with resort, property, and departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
- Identify areas for improvement and offer suggestions to improve efficiency, profitability, and productivity.
- Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary.
Skills and Qualifications
- Required certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Previous experience in customer service, hospitality, retail or childcare is preferred.
- Requires original thinking, creativity, good communication skills, flexibility, resourcefulness, and ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Ability to organize, plan, prioritize and multi-task with integrity and a positive, team-work attitude.
- Shows a professional, cooperative demeanor with a good sense of humor.
- Aptitude in Microsoft Office programs, general computer use, and app skills recommended.
- Required to work a 40-hour week(varies), flexible schedule that will include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Memorial Day Week (May23rd-May 31st) and 4th of July (June 27th-July 12th) are the required Holiday Weeks.
- Able to effectively read, write, and speak English.
- Reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and personal smart phone, criminal background check, and drug screening required.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires the ability to work in tight spaces, bend, sit and/or stand and to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to perform simple grasping, fine manipulation, repetitive hand & arm movements, and squeezing & overhead reaching.
- Must be able to go up and down numerous steps, bend, push, stoop, lift objects, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and walk on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to walk and drive outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including rain, wind and most importantly extreme heat and humidity. 80% of work time is spent outdoors.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is $10.50 per hour. Staff housing is provided on site with a $100.00 housing deposit due upfront and $100 housing payment deducted from pay each bi-weekly pay period.
