The YMCA Internship Program offers students and emerging professionals the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. We are currently seeking motivated candidates for our Fall Internship Program. Interns will support daily operations and contribute to meaningful projects aligned with their internship focus and learning objectives. In addition to completing routine tasks, interns will collaborate with staff on assigned projects that enhance both personal and professional growth. This internship is designed to develop practical skills, strengthen professional confidence, and provide valuable mentorship.
Job Description: Fitness/Wellness
The Wellness Intern will work alongside a Fitness and Wellness Supervisor to complete all tasks outlined in their Internship Plan, gaining a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to oversee programs, staff, budgets, and daily operations within the fitness industry and the YMCA.
Key Responsibilities
• Participate in one-on-one meetings with the supervisor to learn about job responsibilities and key topics within the fitness and wellness field
• Complete assigned projects tailored to facility needs and personalized internship goals
• Gain insight into daily operations from a supervisory perspective
• Assist in developing and implementing marketing strategies to promote YMCA programs
• Support staff in creating a welcoming, engaging, and safe environment for members
Goals and Expectations
• Complete the full internship duration as outlined in the agreed-upon schedule
• Demonstrate reliability, initiative, and a strong willingness to learn
• Assist with day-to-day operations and support YMCA staff in delivering high-quality programs and services
• Actively participate in projects, contributing thoughtful ideas and effort
• Maintain regular communication with your supervisor through check-ins and progress updates
• Develop key professional skills such as time management, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
• Track and document hours and accomplishments for YMCA and academic requirements
• Complete any final evaluations or presentations to successfully conclude the internship
• Respond promptly and professionally to communication from YMCA staff
• Maintain confidentiality regarding member and staff information at all times
• Complete required training within 30 days of hire and participate in ongoing learning opportunities
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all backgrounds
• Ability to adapt quickly and manage multiple responsibilities with limited supervision
• Flexibility to work a variety of hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Successful completion of a background screening
• Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification through an approved provider
• Comfort using technology such as computers, software, and tablets
Physical Demands
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time, typically 4 to 6 hours per shift
• Ability to walk, stoop, kneel, push, pull, climb, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to member needs
