The Utica Comets and Utica City FC are welcoming applications to fill a Communications Internship position for the 2025-26 season.
Internship Term: October 2025 โ April 2026, with a possible extension through June for playoffs
Location: Utica, NY
Format: On-Site / Hybrid
Expected Time Commitment: Approx. 20 hours/week
Supervised by the Vice President of Marketing and Content, interns will assist in the preparation and execution of communications efforts for the Utica Comets and Utica City FC. Through this internship, participants will gain hands-on experience in the areas of sports communications, media relations, and digital media.
Depending on skill level, additional opportunities may be offered in content creation (written, video, and/or graphic design) that can be showcased in a digital portfolio.
This is an unpaid internship. Participants may qualify for academic credit if allowed by their college or university.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a gameday production assistant for Utica Comets and Utica City FC home games, providing clear communication on statistics, game information, and production notes to broadcasters and production crew
- Set up and troubleshoot communication equipment for broadcasts
- Write, proofread, and edit written content for the Comets and UCFC websites. Content may include, but is not limited to, featured stories
- Organize and distribute press box materials (gameday rosters, statistics, game notes, etc.)
- Assist the management of credential requests and prepare gameday credentials
- Support the maintenance of Comets and UCFC team record books
- Update the Comets and UCFC websites with up-to-date records, rosters, and statistics
- Additional duties and special projects as assigned
Additionally, this internship may have opportunities to support communications efforts for other teams and organizations, including the Utica Jr. Comets, in a limited capacity.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
From this internship, participants will be able to take away the following skills and lessons and apply it in future roles:
- Understand the of importance of sports communications and impact of content across a variety of mediums
- Learn to coordinate media relations efforts for a professional sports organization
- Become familiar with statistical record keeping and its use for broadcasting
- Collaborate with a diverse group of individuals in a professional sports environment to navigate ever-changing conditions and successfully accomplish tasks
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- Possess strong written, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word and Excel
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, is preferred, but not required
- Can maintain a high level of professionalism within a professional sports environment
- Ability to adapt to changing game situations and can complete projects under tight deadlines
- Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time; can lift up to 30 lb.
- An understanding of the sport of hockey and/or soccer is preferred, but not required
- Must have a flexible schedule to allow commitment to a majority of Utica Comets and Utica City FC home games during their internship term. Interested applicants must be willing and able to work non-traditional hours in non-traditional settings during peak times of the year
- Intern will be responsible for their own housing, food, and transportation to and from the Adirondack Bank Center. Reimbursement for travel, gas, lodging, etc. is not offered with this internship
